1950
Ingolf Nielsen buys Sønderjyllands Flyveselskab (Airline of South Jutland) and starts to undertake photoflyings etc. from the fields of Ellegaarden near Sønderborg.

1957
Ingolf Nielsen starts to fly taxiplane services Sønderborg - Copenhagen en route. At that time SAS monopolised all danish domestic flights, and therefore no regular en route flying was in question. Ingolf Nielsen did, however, fly on regular times.

1960
The apron at the airfield by Ellegaarden is asphalted and new hangars are build.

1961
The municipality of Sønderborg establishes a new 900m runway.

1964
The probably strangest runway is put into use. A 900m runway, of which only the 450m in the centre are asphalted.

1965
The 800m of the 900m long runway are asphalted, and the runway-ends are therefore still covered only with grass.

1966
A decision is made to build a new airport on Kær Halvø. The municipality and the county will be in charge of the installation costs, whereas Cimber Air is responsible for the construction of the terminal, tower and the necessary facilities.

1968
The work, building Sønderborg Airport on Kær Halvø is commenced, and at the end of the year the new runway is taken into use. Cimber Air is responsible for the running of Sønderborg Airport.

1969
Sønderborg Airport starts flying en route, and the new airport is officially opened. The runway is now 1200m.

1975
The runway is increased to 1500m.

1993
The municipality of Sønderborg and the county of South Jutland take over the terminal, the tower and the running of the airport. Hereby the need for running a public airport with room for several players is met.

1994
Air Alsie builds a 1300 square meter large hangar with workshop and administration.

1995
The Mayor of Sønderborg, Ingolf Winzor, cuts the first turf to a 518 square meter large firestation.

1997-98
The municipalities of Augustenborg, Nordborg, Sydals, Sundeved and Broager join the members of the co-operative system. Thus, the ownership is composed of six suburban municipalities and the county of South Jutland.

2000
The runway is increased to 1797m, and the terminal undergoes a considerable rebuilding/renovation. Air Alsie extends their administration.

2001
Karlog Air builds hangar.

2003
Cimber Air extends the existing hangar with and Sønderborg Airport is building a new 17,46 meter high control tower.

2004
Sønderborg Airport extends the airside with ca. 4000 m2 asphalted aircraft-parking.

2005
Sønderborg Airport builds 700 m2, with combined course-, office and overnight accommodation facilities.
